So, I sort of introduced myself the other day but I feel like my motivation for writing this blog may not have been construed properly – so let me give it another go. You see, this isn’t my first rodeo…

My first blog was littlebrickranch.com and focused on our (my then husband and I’s) newly purchased (completely outdated) 1950s brick ranch. I wrote about our many home improvements, frugal quick fixes, recipes, and the huge organic vegetable square foot garden that I built and nourished until it could nourish us. It was grand…and then, just as quickly, it wasn’t. Managing the blog (I posted 5x – week), all the home improvements, the garden, and still maintaining a full time job was time-consuming – but don’t get me wrong, I loved it!  Living a full life – seeing things grow which I had planted, being busy…It gave me purpose.

When the blog started to grow to a wider audience, I realized I was helping people who were going through similar projects and experiences. I was making friends with other lifestyle bloggers.  I felt like everything in my life was in an upswing…well, except one thing…

The marriage wasn’t working…

What does the word RETIRE mean to you?

***I’m in Thailand!! For the next two weeks I will be reposting some of my earlier lesser read posts. Though wi-fi will be sporadic, I plan to check in from time to time should you write a comment. 🙂 I hope you enjoy and I’ll see you back here in a couple of weeks!***

Boring.  How about fresh salty beach air blowing through your hair while you yell to the cabana boy to bring you another Mai Tai?  Or is it spending more time with your grand kids – taking them to baseball games and roasting marshmallows by the side of the lake?  Does it mean paring down your belongings and packing whats left in an RV to tour the National Parks and see each oceans coast line?  Why do all of these mental images have me landing at some body of water???  🙂  The point is – retirement means something different to each person.

For many Americans, retirement is the bright white light at the end of a long dark and damp tunnel.  The end to the means.  The fat gleaming orange carrot and the end of a long shabby thin string.  2 vacation weeks a year to look forward to until you can reach the end of that long long tunnel.  We arrive at the age of 65, or in my generations case, 67, to a land of new opportunity that many are too tired or sick from the past 40 years to even enjoy.  I hope dearly for myself, AND FOR YOU, that this won’t be the case for us… Continue reading “What does the word RETIRE mean to you?”

Should I Stay or Should I Go? Stay, Sell, or Rent…

**Updated June 2017**  **Update August 2017**

Da na na na na na na na…

I have been grappling with a major decision since the start of this last year – Keep my place and live here, sell it, or rent it out.  What it all comes down to is exactly that – Should I stay or should I go??

A little background – I have lived in this building on and off for the past 11 years.  I have lived in 4 of the units…3 of which I owned.  I lost 2 in the market crash (as gruesome as it sounds), rented another for a year, and eventually bought the one I’m currently residing in with cash further assuring myself the bank couldn’t take this home away from me.  What I couldn’t assure in this transaction was the crazy of my neighbors, neighborhood, and this city as a whole.

I’m not sure if you’ve seen my great city spoken about in the news lately (don’t all you FI peeps avoid TV?), but Chicago is in a bit of a slump…a happiness slump.  Wop wop.  Our violent crimes are out of control and apparently, as the 3rd largest city in the states, our city is causing the overall national crime rate to rise.  Come on, Chicago!  Get your shit together!!

Why Beyoncé is The Queen B

I don’t listen to Beyoncé.  I have nothing against her, per se, I just dont actively go out and purchase her music.  That being said, I don’t exactly hide from it either.  I think she is a talented lady, a very powerful business woman, and has some super catchy tunes ta boot!  But that isn’t the point I wish to make.  This is…

Your new favorite mug

BOOM.  While scrolling Pinterest a few years back I saw this phrase and it really resonated with me.  You have as many hours in a day as Beyoncé.  Such a simple idea but very powerful…especially for all the procrastinators out there!  😉

I Wrote My Will Today…

Everyone should have a will…Right?  Right.

Truth be told, this is something I preach but don’t practice.  You know, like eat healthy and work out.  Sounds great but I rarely do it…the working out part.  Let’s face it – that’s the hard part.  And, like working out, planning for your death is hard.   Hard, but important.

Next week I leave for Thailand to cross off one of my Bucket List items.  I realize this is a trip many have made before and I realize that volunteering with elephants is not likely to be my cause of death.  But… I also realize that shit happens.  And, though I have no intentions of getting swept under a stampede, I am not the type to sit on the sidelines and watch the world go by…I’ll jump (or attempt to jump) on the elephants back and enjoy the ride!

With all that in mind, today I wrote my will.  It isn’t official but I have no doubt it will stand up in court – it is basic, but informative, and will most likely cause those to read it to both laugh and cry…as any will should.  The will is brief.  One printed page of instructions (front and back) for my assets, my Bubs, and my vacuum (My BF will be so happy!)…
